Movement to free your heart

Private & individualized lessons, in person and online.

Embodied authentic expression and therapeutic movement.

Welcome to Free Your Movement

Here we cultivate the practice of listening inward to reconnect with a deeper understanding of our experiential body, release self-judgement, liberate emotions and find new movement freedom. We access the dance of attuning to and allowing the body's natural sways and slows, spins, bounces, shifts and stillness. Movement is medicine for the soul.

Drawing from a lifetime of exploratory movement and over 30 years of dance training, I find movements inspired by waves, clouds, trees, wind, snakes, river-reed, moon, sea...

I've experienced inhibitions, injuries and illness that prevented me from expressing through my body. I share from lived experience, practice and training, bringing trauma awareness to each session, giving you full agency while offering explorations to support your deepening somatic awareness and expanded movement freedom.

Sometimes energy gets stuck in the body, causing discomfort physically, emotionally and/or mentally. Free-form movement and tuning into our body can help to move things through, move them out, and create space for healing and greater wellbeing. A bit like meditation in motion.

"I've been taking private classes with Marita for years. She's been supporting me in overcoming anxiety and shyness about expressing myself through movement. Marita has an intuitive sense of how to get at my blocks, and I feel a fantastic difference in how I move now."

My Philosophy:

How we care for ourselves mirrors our care for each other and the Earth.

Through increasing our embodied presence we encourage what needs to emerge to flow more freely through us, we align our unique gifts to the larger body of the collective and the planet with greater ease. Colonial and patriarchal conditioning lands not only in the psyche but in our physical form. Freeing our embodied authentic movement works in tandem with liberating our minds. Making time for our body is vital to both our individual and our collective wellbeing.

"Marita has created a space for me to learn and experience the natural movement in me that I have doubted my whole life. She is patient with my inexperience and creative in her approach to figuring out what works by incorporating a wealth of knowledge of the mind and body. Recommended for any age, body type, skill level and apprehension." ‍ - James K. ‍

Giving ourselves time to move freely and our body a chance to “speak” might elicit a big cry, a laughing fit or a knowing of something that needs to be written or spoken. It may also simply bring some relief from having begun the cultivation of listening inward.

Whichever way it flows, I look forward to moving together.

"The embodied movement lessons are helping unlock areas of my body that hold stress & pain and transforming them into movement." ~Colleen K. ‍ ‍

Private, customized movement lessons are available for individuals and small groups, in person & online.

Whether you've never danced before or you're a lifelong mover, I’ll meet you where you are.

Dance is for Every Body!

All bodies belong here.

"When I think of movement as medicine, I think of Marita’s private lessons, where I feel truly held. She has supported my healing around years of self-criticism, shame, and internalized cultural stigma. I used to think I needed to work out to feel strong, and now I've learned so much from being still and listening to my body… I can speak by moving rather than in words, which relaxes my mind. I highly recommend interacting with Marita in any sphere of movement." ~ Molly H.
